Depending on the size of the perforation, it may heal on its own. However, for larger perforations, surgical intervention is the only solution. The surgery is called a Tympanoplasty or Myringoplasty. Conventionally, it is performed from behind the ear, but at our hospital, the same procedure is performed with the stitch-less surgery technique through the ear canal.

The eardrum could perforate due to many reasons including infection, trauma, sudden loud sounds, etc. It is crucial to consult a doctor if you feel you have a problem with your ear.
It is extremely important to evaluate your child’s hearing after birth as any issues with the child’s hearing can be detected early on. This is all the more important in premature births, cases where the pregnant mother had any infections and cases of family history of hearing loss. Early detection of hearing loss could be the difference between normal hearing and a lifetime of deafness.
Patients require one day of rest and are discharged the day after surgery and can resume light work as well. However, this also depends on the surgery they have undergone and the doctor will advise them accordingly before being discharged.
Depending on the type of surgery you have undergone, it takes around 3 months to completely heal.
Generally, patients are advised a follow-up ten days after surgery. However, some patients may be called earlier, depending on the surgery they have undergone and their course of treatment. Later on, depending on the healing, patients could be called for follow-ups upto three months after surgery.
After ear surgery, patients must be careful to not allow water to enter the ear for at least 20 days. Hence, patients are advised against having a head bath for this duration. This is done to prevent infections and ensure proper healing.
The material used to graft the eardrum is called a Fascia Lata graft. It is harvested through a small incision made in the thigh. The reason for using this material is that it is far superior to other graft materials and results in better surgical outcomes for patients.
You do not need to see a doctor immediately for a single episode of nosebleeds, however, if you have persistent nosebleeds or multiple episodes within a short time span, it is better to consult a doctor.
Hoarseness is usually the result of prolonged vocal abuse. It could result in cysts, nodules or growths on the vocal cord that needs surgical intervention. The surgery performed is a Microlaryngeal Surgery which is a routine procedure performed on a day care basis.
Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease causes a burning sensation in the chest. It is a relatively non-serious ailment and needs an Upper GI Endoscopy performed to confirm the diagnosis. The treatment involves conservative management with medications.
